If you want to learn about Linux, understanding its underlying file system structure is a good place to start, says Debarshi Das. 

“The Linux directory structure is laid out like a tree, with the root (/) directory being the trunk of the tree from which the rest of the directories branch out,” Das explains, and these directories contain three types of files: 

  • General files 
  • Directory files
  • Device files
