The Ethereum blockchain will undergo a major upgrade this month to make it far more energy efficient, reports Kyt Dotson.
The Merge, which is planned for September 15th, will merge the proof-of-stake Beacon Chain with the main proof-of-work Ethereum blockchain “and essentially replace its proof-of-work engine with the proof-of-stake engine while it’s still running,” Dotson explains.
According to Digiconomist, Dotson says, “Ethereum consumes 78.6 terawatt-hours of electricity per year doing computations,” which is similar to the energy use of Chile or Hong Kong. “After the Merge, this consumption should drop by almost 99.95%, which would make its total energy expenditure below 0.01 terawatt-hours a year.”
