Microsoft is open sourcing the ThreadX real-time operating system (RTOS) along with the embedded development suite that includes it, reports Liam Proven. Although you might not be directly familiar with ThreadX, Microsoft states it has been deployed on more than 12 billion devices, including Raspberry Pis.

Now the company is transferring stewardship of Azure RTOS to the Eclipse Foundation, where it will be known as Eclipse ThreadX and made available under the permissive MIT license, Proven says.

“Eclipse ThreadX provides a vendor-neutral, open source, safety certified OS for real-time applications, all under a permissive license. It is the first and only real-time operating system in the market with the blend of all these attributes to address a wide range of industry needs that will benefit both developers and end users,” the announcement says.
