A new Go-based malware named Chaos is infecting small office/home office (SOHO) routers and launching DDoS attacks targeting both Windows and Linux.
Researchers at Lumen Technologies’ Black Lotus Labs have discovered Chaos infections around the world, reports Dennis Fisher, infecting SOHO routers, embedded Linux devices, and enterprise servers. “The botnet itself is not very large at this point, but has the potential to grow quickly, given that there are Windows and Linux variants of Chaos, and the malware can run on a number of different architectures, including ARM, Intel, and PowerPC,” Fisher says.
Additionally, he notes, the recent shift to remote work has made home routers and other devices outside corporate networks particularly attractive targets for attackers.
