RedMonk has compiled a graph tracking the movement of the top 20 programming languages over the history of its rankings.
In the top half of the rankings, there’s been relatively little movement, as seen in the following list which shows current (and starting) rankings for the top 10 languages:
1. JavaScript (started at #1)
2. Python (started at #4)
3. Java (#2)
4. PHP (#3)
5. C# (#6)
6. CSS (appeared at #10 in 2014)
7. C++ (started at #7)
7. Typescript (tied at #7; appeared at #17 in 2017)
9. Ruby (#5)
10. C (#8)
To create the lists, RedMonk says it “extracts language rankings from GitHub and Stack Overflow, and combines them for a ranking that attempts to reflect both code (GitHub) and discussion (Stack Overflow) traction. The idea is not to offer a statistically valid representation of current usage, but rather to correlate language discussion and usage in an effort to extract insights into potential future adoption trends.”
