Regardless of whether you’re currently planning to leave your job, preparing a transition file is a good idea. A transition file is a “document that you prepare for whoever ends up succeeding you in your role,” says Jacob Kaplan-Moss. “It should contain all the information you’d want them to know to ensure as smooth a transition as possible.”

This type of succession planning demonstrates a level of professionalism that helps your former team and allows you to leave in a way that aims to minimize disruption, Kaplan-Moss says: “The tech industry can feel weirdly small sometimes; you never know when you’ll run into your colleagues again. Being someone they generally want to work with again is always a good thing.”

In this article, Kaplan-Moss outlines practical steps on how to create and maintain a thorough and helpful transition file.
