Sysdig has announced the creation of a new foundation for the Wireshark open source project. Wireshark, “the world’s foremost traffic protocol analyzer,” has grown to more than 2,000 contributors and over 60 million downloads in the past five years, reports Sean Michael Kerner.
“The Wireshark Foundation will have an open governance model that encourages participation and technical contribution. …The nonprofit will be home to SharkFest, Wireshark’s developer and user conference, and the Wireshark source code and assets,” Kerner says.
Wireshark, which recently released version 4.04, will celebrate its 25th anniversary as an open source project this year. The project was originally known as Ethereal and was rebranded in 2006, Kerner notes.
