The Debian project has released version 12, named Bookworm. This major release, which is based on Linux kernel 6.1, will be supported for the next five years.

According to the announcement, Bookworm “contains over 11,089 new packages for a total count of 64,419 packages” and is made up of 1,341,564,204 lines of code.

Debian 12 Bookworm offers an updated installer and ships with several desktop environments, such as:

  • Gnome 43
  • KDE Plasma 5.27
  • LXDE 11
  • LXQt 1.2.0
  • MATE 1.26 
  • Xfce 4.18
