People, rather than technology, are the primary attack vector for cyber threats around the world, says the 2023 SANS Security Awareness Report.
The top category of human risk, says the report, involves “-ishing” — which refers to the three most common social engineering attacks: email-based phishing, text-message (SMS)-based smishing, and voice-based vishing. “This risk was by far the top human risk identified by respondents, which is no surprise and reflects similar findings from other security reports. With the growth of artificial intelligence, it is becoming even easier for cyber threat actors to create customized phishing attacks,” the report states.
Other top risks include:
- Passwords/authentication
- Detection/reporting
- IT admin misconfiguration
