G20 Digital Economy Ministers have proposed a framework for digital public infrastructure (DPI) and recognized DPI as a key element in achieving sustainable development goals, according to an announcement from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
At a recent meeting, the group described DPI “as a set of shared digital systems that should be secure and interoperable, that can be built on open standards and promote access to services for all.”
The G20 Framework for Systems of Digital Public Infrastructure, reports Simon Sharwood, includes:
- Technology in the form of interoperable and reusable digital systems and applications (e.g., software codes, protocols, standards).
- Governance standards that codify human rights and protection of personal data, privacy, and intellectual property.
- A community of private sector and civil society actors who collaborate.
The group has developed other resources “to help countries advance their digital transformation journey” including “A Compendium of The Potential of Digital Public Infrastructure” and a DPI playbook for “building an inclusive and rights-based DPI.”
