Earlier in 2023, the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) dismantled Genesis, “one of the biggest illegal markets on the Internet, known for stealing and selling data from more than 1.5 million computers and over 80 million online accounts, reports Esther Shein.”
This effort, Shein says, was part of ongoing attempts to crack down on the Dark Web, “a subset of the Internet that anonymizes a user’s connection and is often used for illicit activities.”
In this article, Shein describes the origins of the Dark Web, noting its roots in Freenet, which was the basis of Tor, the most widely used browser on the Dark Web. The user privacy that Tor provides is valuable for many reasons; however, the Dark Web has also enabled an enormous criminal ecosystem.
