On 30 September 2024, we’ll be ending support for OpenCensus. Before that date, we recommend you upgrade to the Azure Monitor OpenTelemetry Python Distro, which provides new capabilities, including:

  • Simplified enablement to use a single line-of-code

  • Expanded data collection capabilities with 43 instrumentation libraries available, covering a broad set of frameworks including built-in support for Azure SDKs, HTTP libraries, Django, Flask, and more

  • Full power of OpenTelemetry APIs, including ability to customize metrics, logs, and traces for your business needs

  • Ability to collect histograms

  • Offline storage and automatic retries

If you choose to not upgrade, your data will continue to flow to application insights. However, we’ll be unable to support any Azure support cases opened on this SDK, and you won’t receive the latest product features.

Required action

To avoid being on an unsupported SDK, upgrade to Azure Monitor OpenTelemetry Python Distro by 30 September 2024.
