Open source software (OSS) is a global phenomenon, according to the “World of Open Source: Global Spotlight 2023” report, which says that 90% of organizations surveyed use open source at some level.
The report, sponsored by LF Research, “paints a comprehensive picture of the open source landscape” with regional comparisons of open source adoption and use.
“Globally, 69% of organizations find the benefits of OSS outweigh the costs,” the report states. “Europe leads this sentiment, with 77% of organizations agreeing. This indicates that the value of open source extends beyond mere cost savings. It also includes intangible benefits like fostering innovation, enhancing skill development, and facilitating community collaboration.”
Other findings include:
- 73% of organizations globally and 77% in Europe have a pro-open source stance.
- 60% of organizations encourage or allow team-based decisions on OSS contributions.
- Europe ranked highest in OSS use and contribution as well as government adoption, while Asia-Pacific ranked lowest in these categories.
- 52% of respondents say OSS contributions always or often result in improved software quality.
- Top concerns about OSS contributions include legal, licensing, and leaking IP issues.
- 24% of organizations surveyed require training in secure software development.
- Checking the activity level of the project community is the top action when evaluating a new OSS component.
