Azure Game Development Virtual machines provide images to create and test games in the cloud with preinstalled game development tools. Azure Game Development Virtual Machines is just one of many investments Microsoft is making to accelerate developer productivity for game developers. We’ve received valuable feedback from customers that it’s critical for virtualized development environments to integrate with their enterprise device management infrastructure, provide more configurability, and leverage the cloud to make scaling with large workloads more accessible. To focus on the broadest set of game developer needs we are retiring the Game Development Virtual Machines marketplace app while we continue investing in new capabilities for game developers in Visual Studio and Azure.
On February 1st, 2024, the Game Development Virtual Machine on the Azure Marketplace will be retired. Before that date we recommend reviewing your usage of this marketplace application. Virtual Machines created prior to retirement using this marketplace application will not be impacted. These virtual machines will continue to be available for as long as you keep the virtual machine and related resources provisioned in your Azure subscription. Continuous integration pipelines that use this marketplace application will need to be updated to use a new base image and automation updated to install applications needed. A sample repository with scripts to create a new custom image, based on our internal Game Development Virtual Machine repository, is available in the AVD Landing Zone Accelerator repository.
