Microsoft Dev Box is an Azure service that gives developers self-service access to preconfigured, project-specific developer workstations. Dev Box has been updated with several new developer productivity and enterprise management capabilities. Developers now get greater flexibility through more customization options, and administrators gain improved visibility and control over resources.

New ready-to-code features for developers

  • Team customizations (private preview), images (private preview), and project-based catalogs (preview) enable platform engineers and dev leads with new ways to create customized development environments for teams.

  • A customization template for accessibility configurations provides a popular option for the visually impaired community (preview).

  • Dev Box in Windows App offers an improved connection experience and the ability to seamlessly transition between Dev Box and Windows devices, on premises or in the cloud (preview).

Enterprise management capabilities

  • Dev Box connection telemetry is now available through Azure Monitor to enhance observability and troubleshooting capabilities for admins (generally available).

  • Hibernation on disconnect: When enabled, dev boxes can hibernate (if there is no active RDP session), helping organizations optimize costs (preview).

  • Windows 11 Enterprise image can be published into Azure Marketplace for use with Microsoft Dev Box: Developer tool vendors can now create and publish Dev Box-compatible custom images, with third-party tools via the ‘Windows client for developers’ image in the Azure Marketplace. This is now available.

  • Dev boxes can now be deployed in South East Asia, South Africa North, Germany West Central, Italy North, Brazil South, Switzerland North, and Sweden Central* (generally available). *Sweden Central will be generally available June 1, 2024
