Adobe has announced that it will acquire the open source Figma design platform for $20 billion in cash and stock.
Figma’s product strengths, says Ingrid Lunden at TechCrunch, lie in “design and prototyping, for individuals and teams, executed in a very streamlined and modern, cloud-based environment,” and it has amassed around 4 million users.
Both Adobe and Figma, however, have stated that the acquisition will not change things for users. In a blog post, Figma CEO and co-founder Dylan Field says that “Adobe is deeply committed to keeping Figma operating autonomously” and that he will continue to serve as CEO.
Scott Belsky, Adobe’s chief product officer and EVP of Creative Cloud, says in a LinkedIn post that “Figma will operate w/ autonomy, continuing to work their magic, no plans to change prices, and will also continue to be free for education.”
