The Open Source Initiative (OSI) is making the approval process for new open source licenses clearer and easier, says Steven J. Vaughan-Nichols. “The OSI has done great work in defending open source, but getting new licenses approved has never been easy or simple. You see, open-source licensing is very complicated,” he notes.
In this article, Vaughan-Nichols spells out the OSI’s revised requirements for open source licenses. For example, he says, if you want to submit a new license for consideration, that license must:
- Comply with the Open Source Definition — specifically OSD points 3, 5, 6, and 9.
- Identify what projects, if any, are already using the license.
- Identify the license steward.
