Bloomberg has launched a FOSS Contributor Fund, through which to support open source projects that it uses, and announced the inaugural recipients:

  • Apache Arrow — A project that speeds data transfer and analytics for data-intensive applications.
  • Curl — A ubiquitous tool used to interact with web services.
  • Celery — A primary task management tool in the Django and Python ecosystem.

The fund will run a quarterly election to award up to three grants of $10,000, focusing on tools and projects on which the company relies.

“Developing programs that support the open source community through a multi-pronged approach isn’t just philanthropy,” says Alyssa Wright of Bloomberg’s OSPO. “It’s common sense.”
