Azure API for FHIR will be retired on 30 September 2026. Migrate to Azure Health Data Services FHIR service before that date. Due to this retirement, new Azure API for FHIR deployments will be blocked starting from 1 April 2025.

Azure Health Data Services is the evolved version of Azure API for FHIR that enables customers to manage FHIR, DICOM, and MedTech services with integrations into other Azure services. In addition to consumption-based pricing that can lower costs, Azure Health Data Services FHIR service provides a rich set of capabilities including:

  • Autoscaling at no cost
  • Transaction bundle support and search improvements
  • Enhanced capabilities for data integration & analytics through converter tools, incremental bulk import, Eventing and Power BI connector

Required action

To avoid service disruptions, follow the migration strategies to migrate to Azure Health Data Services before 30 September 2026.
